Two Scientists or Engineers for Data Science

The Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of the Faroe Islands currently has two open positions to support its new MSc in Data Science education, focusing on AI, IT security, and the Internet of Things (IoT). All interested applicants with strong academic backgrounds in the fields of computer science, software engineering, or natural sciences, and having experience from either academia or industry, are encouraged to apply. Previous academic research and teaching experience in the relevant disciplines is highly desirable but not strictly required.

The Faculty of Science and Technology
The faculty delivers BSc programs in biology, general engineering, and software engineering, and the MSc in Data Science education. The current research interests at the faculty include mathematics and statistics, computer science and data science, applications of AI (e.g., natural language processing, weather predictions), algorithms, computer networks and communications, wireless networks, biostatistics and bioinformatics, genetic research in marine organisms and human disease, biodiversity, environmental biology and chemistry, fish farming and fish stocks, physics and engineering, energy conservation, and climate change.

The Positions
The Faculty of Science and Technology invites applicants to become part of an exciting opportunity to join its computer science team, which has delivered the BSc in Software Engineering since 2010 and the MSc in Data Science since 2023.

The MSc in Data Science focuses on cutting-edge IT subjects in areas including AI, IT security, and IoT. The two advertised positions are created to support the all-around work of the team, with the main duties being to plan, arrange, and teach courses in the bachelor's and master's programs, supervise student theses/projects, and conduct research in the prioritized areas. The research will be according to the scientific interests, competencies, and experience of the successful applicants. It is expected that successful applicants will have a strong desire to develop in the position, keep themselves continuously updated within at least one of the prioritized areas, and develop prolific collaborations with universities abroad in these disciplines.

Qualifications
Applicants should hold a relevant university degree (MSc or PhD) in, e.g., computer science, software engineering, data science, mathematics/statistics, physics, electrical engineering, or a similar field. In addition to the required educational qualifications, careful consideration will be given to the work experience of applicants.

Applicants will ideally have experience in one or more of the following areas:

• IT security or IoT (1st priority for the two positions)
• Data science and statistics with R, introductory AI, machine learning, or deep learning with Python (2nd priority)
• Introductory computer science, discrete mathematics, linear algebra, operating systems, software engineering, web applications (3rd priority)

Desirable experience includes:

• Good teaching and research experience from universities in the Nordic countries or Europe
• Good language competencies in either English, a Scandinavian language, or Faroese
• Relevant and recent experience from either the IT industry, research institutions, or academia

The level of appointment will be as Assistant Professor (ordinarily 4 years), Associate Professor, or Full Professor (permanent positions), depending on the qualifications of the applicants. Employment as a Lecturer (i.e., full-time teaching position) may also be considered for a period (ordinarily 1-4 years) agreed upon between the applicant and the university. Promotion from an Assistant Professor or a Lecturer position to a permanent position will be subject to a positive outcome of an assessment after the fixed-term period.

Applicants should specify the level of appointment they are seeking.

Terms of Appointment
The positions will be filled in accordance with the Regulations for Positions at the University of the Faroe Islands, which can be found here. Salary and terms of employment are according to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Faroese professional union Akademikarafelag Føroya.
